Do you wait til your car is broken before you do any maintenance on it? I don't, mine gets fueled, oil changes, washed, tires changed and rotated, transmission flushed and all kinds of maintenance. It is all too common today that we wait til our bodies are broken down before we fix them. Why is it that our cars are better maintained than our bodies. We don't get a second chance at our body, we have what we were born with, we can't just run out and buy a new one (well for the most part... I guess we can replace and enhance parts.) Are you doing everything you can to keep your body in tip top condition?
What should we be doing?
First I think we need to nourish ourselves properly, this means getting our fruits and veggies, lean proteins, healthy fats (yes I said fats!) and whole grains. This also means cutting back or eliminating the processed crap, junk food, foods high in trans fats, greasy drive-through food, and soda. One rule that I like if god made it, it is probably good to eat, if man made it it is probably bad to eat (although it might taste good).
Second we need to give ourselves plenty of water. Our bodies are mostly made of water, so it needs water to survive, and perform some of its most basic functions. By the time you are thirsty you are already dehydrated, make it a habit to drink water regularly. When you are drinking the amount of water you should, it is really hard to find time to drink much else. And no drinking crystal light, or other liquids is not the same as drinking water. Your body wants plain water (maybe a little lemon in it is ok). A rule of thumb on the amount of water you should be drinking is to take your body weight divide it by 2 and that number is the number of oz of water that you should be drinking. For example lets say you weigh 150lbs, you would divide by 2 which is 75, so you should be drinking 75oz of water if you weigh 150lbs. Hope that makes sense. Are you getting enough?
Think positive!! It has been researched that by thinking positive thoughts we can actually change things in our bodies, and lives. The power of our minds is incredible. The average person uses less than 13% of their brain. Can you imagine the power we would unleash if we could figure out how to use the rest. It is so important to think positive. Most happy people are not happy because life has been easy for them, they are happy because they have chosen to have a positive outlook. There have been numerous stories of people who heal themselves from terminal illnesses through positive thinking. If you think your life sucks, or your body is unhealthy, it probably will be. If you think your life is wonderful, or your body is healthy, it probably will be too.
Exercise your brain!! this means pick up a book and read, take a class, learn something new!! It is so important that we continue to exercise our brains and push ourselves to grow. I know some of you don't love to read, that is okay, go take a class, no it doesn't have to be math or science, take an art class, or a sewing class, a pottery class, a alternative health class. Keep your brain learning and active so it doesn't quit on you!
Exercise your body!!! Physical exercise is a great way to combat stress, lose a little weight, and plain just stay healthy. A great fittness blog is.http://www.imafitnessjunky.blogspot.com/ it is always talking about great exercises. I feel that this is one of the most important things you can do for yourself is to exercise. Exercise helps the body release endorphins that make you feel happy, so it is a great way to beat depression. I cannot say enough positive things about exercise, I love it!! I know it is hard somedays, but just try to be active for atleast 20-30 minutes each day, you will start to notice you feel better, you are happier, you have more energy, and possibly a few lbs lighter after a little while.
Give your body proper rest. They say for the average adult 7-9 hours of sleep!! I would bet money that not even half of you are getting that much sleep. The body and mind need that rest to recoup from the days work. This is a very important part of your health, make sure you are getting the rest that you need.
Find ways to coupe with stress. I know all of us in one form or another have stress in our lives. While some stress is good for us, too much is very unhealthy. They have found that stress is a leading cause in many diseases such as insomnia, heart disease and others. I have a lot of my clients tell me that they don't feel stressed, and then they tell me about all the stuff that they are taking on, and all the things they are worried about and I know they are stressed. I think we have gotten so used to the feeling of stress in our lives that we don't know what it feels like any more. Exercise is a great way to help fight stress, relaxation techniques such as meditation are great, my preferance is a hot bath with essential oils, but find what works for you and use it!
Finally try a few alternative treatments. The great thing about foot zone therapy is it helps to keep the entire body in balance and functioning as it should. I have noticed that when I am being zoned regularly I get sick less often if at all, I have more energy, I am sleeping better, and I seem to be happier. Another alternative therapy that is a great preventative maintenance is essential oils. They help stimulate the body to heal itself, in addition to helping the moods, and many other things. I love using my essential oils. These are just a few examples of the types of alternative treatments you can do to maintain a healthy body.
I hope this helps you to remember to take care of yourself. I know most of you have a lot of people in your life that you are caring for regularly, but remember if you don't take time to take care of yourself, there won't be time to take care of others. Hope you all have a wonderful, happy, healthy day!
