Fun Fact

Sleep—Well
They snooze 2 more hours per week, compared with overweight people, says a study from Eastern Virginia Medical School. Researchers theorize that a lack of shut-eye is linked to lower levels of appetite-suppressing hormones like leptin and higher levels of the appetite-boosting hormone ghrelin.

Copy Them: Break it down: Two extra hours of sleep a week is only 17 more minutes a day—a lot more manageable, even for the most packed of schedules. Start there and slowly work toward 8 hours of snooze time a night—the right amount for most adults.

Fun Fact

Movers And Shakers
On average, slim people are on their feet an extra 2 1/2 hours per day—which can help burn off 33 pounds a year, according to a study from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Copy Them: Try a reality check. Studies have shown that people often overestimate how active they really are, says Gallagher. Most people actually spend 16 to 20 hours a day just sitting. Wear a pedometer on an average day, and see how close you get to the recommended 10,000 steps. Your day should combine 30 minutes of structured exercise with a variety of healthy habits, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or mopping the floor with extra vigor. To see how many calories your activities burn, see the exercise calculator at www.caloriecontrol.org.

Fun Fact

Have A Self-Control Gene
Researchers at Tufts University found that the biggest predictor of weight gain among women in their 50s and 60s was their level of disinhibition, or unrestrained behavior. Women with low disinhibition (in other words, a finely tuned sense of restraint) had the lowest body mass index. High disinhibition (i.e., low restraint) was linked to an adult weight gain of as much as 33 pounds.

Copy Them: Prepare for moments when your disinhibition is likely to be higher—such as when you're in a festive atmosphere with a large group of friends. If you're at a party, tell yourself you'll take one of every fourth passed hors d'oeuvre. If you're out at dinner, order an appetizer portion and share dessert. Or if you're stressed—another low-restraint moment—make sure you have a source of crunchy snacks (like fruit or carrot sticks) at the ready.

Fun Fact

Creatures Of Habit
Any dietitian will tell you that a varied diet is good—but too much variety can backfire, says Katz, author of The Flavor Point Diet. Studies have shown that too many tastes and textures encourage you to overeat, he explains. "Thin people have what I call a food groove—the majority of their meals consist of well-planned staples," says Beck. "There are a few surprises thrown in, but for the most part, their diets are fairly predictable."

Copy Them: Try to be as consistent as possible with your major meals—have cereal for breakfast, a salad at lunch, and so forth. It's okay to add grilled chicken to the salad one day and tuna the next, but by sticking to a loosely prescribed meal schedule, you limit the opportunities to overindulge.

Fun Fact

Eat More Fruit
Lean people, on average, have one more serving of fruit and eat more fiber and less fat per day than overweight people, reports a 2006 study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

Copy Them: Start tinkering. Examine your diet for ways to add whole fruits (not juices) to your meals and snacks. Aim for two or three servings per day. Sprinkle berries in your cereal or on your yogurt. Add sliced pears to your turkey sandwich, or bake an apple for dessert. Keep a bowl of fruit on your kitchen table or desk to motivate you to think fruit first, vending machine never.

Fun Fact

Recycle and reuse  - get one more use out of a used tea bag before throwing it out.    I know... you are thinking what would I do with a used tea bag... well you can put it on dry lips for about 30 seconds to help repair damaged skin cells and speed cell renewal.  Store them in the fridge in a baggie for up to a week.

Fun Fact

It's not that thin women are immune to emotional eating, says Kara Gallagher, PhD, a weight loss expert based in Louisville. But they tend to recognize when they're doing it and stop.

Copy Them: Add the word 'Halt' to your vocabulary, says Gallagher. More than just a command (as in stop eating that entire sleeve of cookies), it's an acronym that stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired—the four most common triggers for emotional eating.

If you're truly hungry, choose a balanced snack, such as a handful of nuts, to tide you over until your next meal. But if you're angry, lonely, or tired, seek an alternative calorie-free solution to your emotional need. Blow off steam by going for a run or just jumping around—the heartbeat boost will help dissipate your anger. Lonely? Call a friend, e-mail your kid, or walk to the park or mall. Being around others will make you feel more connected to your community (even if you don't bump into anyone you know). If you're tired, for heaven's sake, sleep!

Fun Fact

Most of us who struggle with extra pounds tend to view hunger as a condition that needs to be cured—and fast, says Judith S. Beck, PhD, author of the new Beck Diet Solution. "If you fear hunger, you might routinely overeat to avoid it," she says. Thin people tolerate it because they know hunger pangs always come and go, buying them some time.

Copy Them: Pick a busy day to purposely delay lunch by an hour or two. Or try skipping an afternoon snack one day. You'll see that you can still function just fine. Then next time you feel those grumbles, you'll hold off before making a beeline for the fridge.

Healthy Challenge GAME ON

GAME STARTS Monday January 10, 2010!!!

The best part about this is there is a team of people who will be counting on you, so you will be motivated to do your best.  Depending on how many sign up will depend on how many teams we have.

Okay everyone 4 weeks of a getting healthy (hoping for me that includes a little weight loss) CHALLENGE!!! I need enough people to have 2 teams. Here are the rules:

Each day you have the opportunity to earn 100 points: a perfect day would be something like this...

30 meal points (6 points per meal) for eating 5 fully sanctioned meals with no snacking in between. I will provide the list of foods in a bit.

20 Exercise points for getting your butt moving for 20 minutes, this could be anything from a nice walk to a full fledged workout, to dancing around the house with your kids for 20 consecutive minutes!

10 points for drinking 3 liters (yes 3 liters) of water per day, your skin will love you.

15 sleeps points for getting at least 7 hours of sleep that night (or atleast be lying in bed trying to sleep 7 hours before you know you have to be up in the morning.)  Those with babies who wake are excused (you really have no control over this)

20 Transformation points - you get 10 for getting rid of a bad habit and making sure it stays gone daily, and 10 points for adding in a new healthy habit and making sure it is added daily.

5 communication points for being in contact with at least one teammate and at least one opponent each day (this includes phone, facebook, e-mails and texts)

Here is the best part...

Each week you get one full day off where you don't have to do any of the healthy things!! Then you also get on meal off.  However I found it was easiest to stick to the diet even on my day off... the first week is by far the hardest, but after you get past all the addictions and cravings you realize how great you feel.

Bonus points can be earned. You earn 10 points by turning in your weekly scores on time, this will be Each Monday morning by 10AM, you will want to e-mail me your sheet.

You can also earn a bonus each week equaling 20% of your points earned for the week for losing 1% of your body weight.

Bonus Points can also be earned by doing additional workouts.  If you get in an additional 60 minutes over the course of the week you can earn an additional 20 points

PENALTIES:
10 point snacking penalty for snacking between meals on anything except celery
20 point collusion penalty if any player suggest to any other player a compromise of integrity.
25 point per portion alcohol penalty a portion equals any amount of alcohol up to 6 oz wine, 12 oz beer, or 1.5 oz hard liquor. You may consume alcohol on your day off. If at any point during the game a player fails to earn their weight-loss bonus that player then looses all alcohol privileges for the game.

Last year we had a problem with soda (as it is not part of the approved foods list it is not allowed, not even diet)  You may have it on your day off and that is it.  Otherwise you would forfiet your food points for that meal or you would be hit with a snacking penalty if it is between meals.

How to win this game:
At the end of the week your points are turned in and an average is taken for each team, and then a running total is kept for the game until the end of 4 weeks. At the end of 4 weeks the team with the highest score wins.

Fun Fact

On a fullness scale of 1 to 10, the slim stop eating at a level of 6 or 7, says Jill Fleming, RD, author of Thin People Don't Clean Their Plates. The rest of us may keep going to an 8 or 10. Why? It may be because you mistakenly equate the sensation of fullness with satisfaction and feel deprived if you stop short, says Fleming. Or you may just be used to finishing what's in front of you, regardless of whether you really need it.

Copy Them: About halfway through your next meal, put your fork down and, using the 1 to 10 scale, rate your level of fullness. Do it again when you have about five bites left. The goal is to increase your awareness of how satisfied you feel during a meal. (Bonus: It also slows down your eating, which allows the sensation of fullness to settle in.)

Try it Tuesday

Benefits:
• Provides calcium equivalent to 8 oz. of milk.
• Supports the health of bones and teeth.
• Provides 75% of the American Academy of Pediatrics new vitamin D3 guidelines.

Sunshine Heroes Calcium Plus D3 [Structural]. Lifelong calcium intake is essential for the development and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth. Obtaining adequate calcium is especially important during childhood and adolescence, when bones are growing and developing. Each serving of Sunshine Heroes Calcium Plus D3 provides 300 mg of calcium, equivalent to an 8-ounce serving of milk. It also provides 140 mg of phosphorus, which works closely with calcium in the body to build strong bones and teeth.
Vitamin D helps the body maintain healthy levels of calcium and phosphorus. Calcium can only be absorbed by the body when vitamin D is present. Vitamin D also plays many important roles beyond bone health. Recent scientific evidence suggests that vitamin D plays a vital part in maintaining innate immunity. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has recently doubled its recommendation for the minimum amount of vitamin D that children should get daily.

The new guidelines recommend at least 400 international units (IU) daily. Most children don’t drink enough milk to provide adequate levels of vitamin D. The AAP states that the best way to ensure that children receive adequate vitamin D is through supplementation. Vitamin D3 is the form of vitamin D that is produced by our own bodies in response to sunlight, and is considered to be the most bioactive form. One serving of Sunshine Heroes Calcium Plus D3 provides 300 IU of vitamin D3.

Chew up to 3 soft chews per day as a dietary supplement. Chew carefully and thoroughly before swallowing.

Fun Fact

Turns out, research shows that thin people simply don't think about food the same way as—well, the rest of us. "Thin people have a relaxed relationship with food," explains David L. Katz, MD, an associate professor adjunct in public health at Yale University. "Those who are overweight, however, tend to be preoccupied by it. They focus on how much or how often they eat, or attach labels like good and bad to certain foods. As a result, mealtime is always on the brain."

5 Muscle-Building, Energy-Packed Vitamins

Man with vitamin
Five years after telling a bunch of angry apes to keep their filthy paws off him, Charlton Heston starred in Soylent Green. In the film, a megacorporation solves a starving world's need for nutritious food by turning the dead into dinner. This is complete science fiction, of course: Most of us are so short on key nutrients we couldn't possibly be someone's square meal.

In fact, studies show that 77 percent of men don't take in enough magnesium, that many of us are deficient in vitamin D, and that the vitamin B12 in our diets may be undermined by a common heartburn medication. And we haven't even mentioned our problems with potassium and iodine.

It's time to play catch-up. Follow our advice, and a cannibal will never call you junk food.

Vitamin D

This vitamin's biggest claim to fame is its role in strengthening your skeleton. But vitamin D isn't a one-trick nutrient: A study in Circulation found that people deficient in D were up to 80 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke. The reason? D may reduce inflammation in your arteries.

The shortfall: Vitamin D is created in your body when the sun's ultraviolet B rays penetrate your skin. Problem is, the vitamin D you stockpile during sunnier months is often depleted by winter, especially if you live in the northern half of the United States, where UVB rays are less intense from November through February. Case in point: When Boston University researchers measured the vitamin D status of young adults at the end of winter, 36 percent of them were found to be deficient.

Hit the mark: First, ask your doctor to test your blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D. "You need to be above 30 nanograms per milli-liter," says Michael Holick, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of medicine at Boston University. Come up short? Take 1,400 IU of vitamin D daily from a supplement and a multivitamin. That's about seven times the recommended daily intake for men, but it takes that much to boost blood levels of D, says Dr. Holick.

Magnesium

This lightweight mineral is a tireless multitasker: It's involved in more than 300 bodily processes. Plus, a study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that low levels of magnesium may increase your blood levels of C-reactive protein, a key marker of heart disease.

The shortfall: Nutrition surveys reveal that men consume only about 80 percent of the recommended 400 milligrams (mg) of magnesium a day. "We're just barely getting by," says Dana King, M.D., a professor of family medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. "Without enough magnesium, every cell in your body has to struggle to generate energy."

Hit the mark: Fortify your diet with more magnesium-rich foods, such as halibut and navy beans. Then hit the supplement aisle: Few men can reach 400 mg through diet alone, so Dr. King recommends ingesting some insurance in the form of a 250 mg supplement. One caveat: Scrutinize the ingredients list. You want a product that uses magnesium citrate, the form best absorbed by your body.

Vitamin B12

Consider B12 the guardian of your gray matter: In a British study, older people with the lowest levels of B12 lost brain volume at a faster rate over a span of 5 years than those with the highest levels.

The shortfall: Even though most men do consume the daily quota of 2.4 micrograms, the stats don't tell the whole story. "We're seeing an increase in B12 deficiencies due to interactions with medications," says Katherine Tucker, Ph.D., director of a USDA program at Tufts University. The culprits: acid-blocking drugs, such as Prilosec, and the diabetes medication metformin.

Hit the mark: You'll find B12 in lamb and salmon, but the most accessible source may be fortified cereals. That's because the B12 in meat is bound to proteins, and your stomach must produce acid to release and absorb it. Eat a bowl of 100 percent B12-boosted cereal and milk every morning and you'll be covered, even if you take the occasional acid-blocking med. However, if you pop Prilosec on a regular basis or are on metformin, talk to your doctor about tracking your B12 levels and possibly taking an additional supplement.

Potassium

Without this essential mineral, your heart couldn't beat, your muscles wouldn't contract, and your brain couldn't comprehend this sentence. Why? Potassium helps your cells use glucose for energy.

The shortfall: Despite potassium's can't-live-without-it importance, nutrition surveys indicate that young men consume just 60 percent to 70 percent of the recommended 4,700 mg a day. To make matters worse, most guys load up on sodium: High sodium can boost blood pressure, while normal potassium levels work to lower it, says Lydia A. L. Bazzano, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant professor of epidemiology at Tulane University.

Hit the mark: Half an avocado contains nearly 500 mg potassium, while one banana boasts roughly 400 mg. Not a fan of either fruit? Pick up some potatoes — a single large spud is packed with 1,600 mg.

Iodine

Your thyroid gland requires iodine to produce the hormones T3 and T4, both of which help control how efficiently you burn calories. That means insufficient iodine may cause you to gain weight and feel fatigued.

The shortfall: Since iodized salt is an important source of the element, you might assume you're swimming in the stuff. But when University of Texas at Arlington researchers tested 88 samples of table salt, they found that half contained less than the FDA-recommended amount of iodine. And you're not making up the difference with all the salt hiding in processed foods —U.S. manufacturers aren't required to use iodized salt. The result is that we've been sliding toward iodine deficiency since the 1970s.

Hit the mark: Sprinkling more salt on top of an already sodium-packed diet isn't a great idea, but iodine can also be found in a nearly sodium-free source: milk. Animal feed is fortified with the element, meaning it travels from cows to your cereal bowl. Not a milk man? Eat at least one serving of eggs or yogurt a day; both are good sources of iodine. http://www.active.com/nutrition/Articles/5_Muscle-Building__Energy-Packed_Vitamins.htm?cmp=17-6351

Other remedies:
Take a slice of peeled potato (about 1 in. thick) and place it over the abscess or boil and secure it there with tape. Leave it on there for a couple hours and it will pull the poison out. You can see the poisons on the potato.
Apply a cloth soaked in one part lobelia and three parts mullein in warm water to bring the affected area to a head. Puncture lightly with a sterilized needle, and wash gently. Garlic oil will help defend against infection. Apply vitamin E oil twice a day to speed the healing process.
B-complex, lecithin, and zinc will defend against future sores.
Apply wintergreen oil, cayenne extract, or a strong comfrey root tea. This will help bring the affected area to a head and aid in drying and mending the abscess or boil. Top of Form

Testimonials for Lifelong Wellness Supplements

I have noticed a significant increase in my mental focus and
energy since starting dōTERRA’s Lifelong Wellness supplement
program. I sleep better and the pain I used to have in my joints
is gone. Unlike other supplements I have used that have upset
my stomach and left me wondering if they are doing anything
for me, I used doTERRA’s supplements from day one with no
stomach upset and noticeable results. dōTERRA supports my
goal of getting better as I age, not the other way around.
Peggy Smith

I have been an avid runner for more than 40 years,
but four years ago I had severe pain in my hip that
caused me to stop running. Within six weeks after
being introduced to dōTERRA’s Lifelong Wellness
program, the pain in my hip was completely gone. I
can now run again pain free.
Wayne Shute

For years I have suffered from pain
and a lack of energy. I would consume
two or three energy drinks throughout
the day to keep me going. Since I have
been using d–oTERRA’s supplements,
my energy is back, I feel better and
I have less pain.
Tav Truman

As a fitness dance instructor I ached in my
knees after every class and wore elastic
support braces to help me cope with the pain.
After using dōTERRA’s Lifelong Wellness
supplements for about six weeks I started
noticing a difference with the pain, and I am
now able to teach without the braces. If I even
miss one or two days of the supplements I can
tell a difference, they are wonderful!
Marti Christensen

I coupled d–oTERRA’s Lifelong Wellness supplements
with d– oTERRA’s philosophy of healthy lifestyle
choices in an effort to lose weight. After changing
my lifestyle and using the products for one month,
I’ve lost 10 lbs., and with my increased energy and
elevated mood find it easy to manage my appetite
and keep the weight off.
Peter Bagwell

I have suffered for years from a broken ankle that was full
of arthritis and threatened my career as a school teacher.
My daughter introduced me to dōTERRA’s Lifelong
Wellness supplements and they helped me stand and walk
pain free again. I am looking forward to a new school year
with new found energy—thank you dōTERRA!
Margaret Marshall

I have suffered for many years with chronic neck and
back pain, and muscle spasms. My only way of coping
with the pain was the daily use of muscle relaxers and
anti-inflammatory pain medication. To get any rest at
night, I was forced to sleep on an ice pack. When I
began taking dōTERRA’s Lifelong Wellness
supplement pack, my muscle spasms disappeared
almost instantly. I sleep much better now and I rarely
wake up in the morning feeling stiff and sore as before.
I finally have the physical ability and energy to play
with my three young sons more often.

Daily Vitamin & supplement

Do you take a daily vitamin?  I do, and have found that my body functions better, I have more energy and just over all feel better when I do this.  I love my current supplement and I bet you can probably already guess who makes it....

Yep that is correct doTERRA!!!  They have a 3 product supplement that I love and want to share with you.  The first is a Essential oil Omega complex.  For those of you who are not familiar with all the benefits of a daily omega supplement, let me share... It helps with your cardiovascular system, your skin, your joints, your brain, and your digestive system just to name a few.  This has helped immensely for me to clear up my brain fog.  If you don't have one in your current daily routine, I would recommend getting one.  I have tried several different brands and have found the doTERRA one to be my favorite mainly because I don't burp it up throughout the day.

EO Mega®
Essential Oil Omega Complex

dōTERRA®'s EO Mega® is a unique formula of CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade™ essential oils clove, frankincense, thyme, cumin, wild orange, peppermint, ginger, and German chamomile, and a proprietary blend of marine and land-sourced omega fatty acids from flaxseed, pomegranate seed, evening primrose, cranberry seed, and concentrated fish oils. Omega fatty acids have been shown to support healthy joint function and brain health. A daily dose of EO Mega provides 1 gram of marine oils, 1 gram of land oils, and 60 mg of the EO Mega essential oil blend. It uses only clean and pure sources of concentrated fish oils and is enteric coated to prevent the fishy return of inferior omega fatty acid products.

    Pregnancy

I am hoping with some of my tips on fertility that I might have some readers who could finally be pregnant.   Here are a few tips to help you through the pregnancy and childbirth.  Unless previously zoned, do not zone in 1st trimester.

Trying to stay pregnant:  False unicorn prevents miscarriage.

Premature Labor:    Rub Lavender or Baby Me across the abdomen to slow or stop contractions.

Stretch marks:  Baby Me, lavender, or geranium oil added to carrier oil or Vitamin E and apply all over abdomen and hip area.

Morning sickness:  DigestZen (DoTERRA) Inside-out, Ez-Traveler, (Butterfly Express) Orange, Grapefruit, lemon or ginger.  Behind ears, smell.  Wild yam cream, vitamin B.  If Lemon oil works, it may indicate kidney stones.

Toxemia: Vitality (Butterfly Express), Cypress.  Dilute for massage; diffuse; inhale deeply.

Fenugreek herb, and fennel oil (not to be used more than 10 days in a row)—increases milk production when nursing.  Parsley herb & peppermint oil dries up milk.

Placenta Previa:  rub oils across the top of the belly to pull placenta up.

Postpartum Depression:  Whisper(DoTERRA) Heart Song, Tranquility, (Butterfly Express) wild yam cream to balance hormones.

Breach Position:  relax the abdominal muscles with a chakra clearing over the womb—counterclockwise.  Donna Eden says that the baby will follow the energies of the hand.

    Child Birth

Five weeks before you deliver, start taking 5-W from Nature's Sunshine, it is supposed to help prepare that area, making childbirth easier.
Mineral water on perineum.  Do not zone until spotting has discontinued.  Liquid cayenne pepper will help stop bleeding.

Oils: Rose, Clary Sage, Millenia (after the placenta delivers—will close up the cervix!), Sweet Orange (calms nausea during transition).

    Inducing labor

Rub Clary Sage oil on your abdomen to help start contractions.

Soak in a ginger bath to soften the cervix: ¼ cup ginger in a warm bath.

Eating Pineapple - helps to soften the cervix

Castor oil:  2 oz castor oil in orange juice—can make you sick and you may never want to drink orange juice again. (I would not recommend this as it may cause serious diarrhea)

Stimulate your nipples for 2 hours, have sex.
